Community
One of the blessings of working in a small, elite law Firm is the ability to make a difference in the legal profession and our local community through pro bono (free) representation and other activities. John Buckley performs community activities in three main areas:
  1. Pro bono representation of families and parents in actions against the El Paso County and Colorado Departments of Human Services, respectively. Our Firm has been successful in several high visibility cases involving these government agencies that sometimes wrongfully accuse parents.
  2. Legislative activities to benefit the children of divorce. John Buckley drafted and lobbied for a bill that would set a presumption of shared parenting (absent abuse and other narrow exceptions) in all cases of divorce for the sake of the children of Colorado. Working with other men and women nationwide, he works to allow kids the benefit of two loving parents - something that is woefully lacking in the present legal system of contentious and destructive divorce actions in our courts.
  3. Lectured on numerous occasions at his alma mater, the USAF Academy. In 1996-97, he lectured several times during the Character Development Symposiums to the Cadet Wing on the importance of character and integrity. He participated with POWS and other heroes within the Air Force community then and during the Falcon Heritage Forum in the Fall of 2003. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the USAFA Association of Graduates, and serves as graduate mentor for the cadet squadron from which he graduated, Cadet Squadron (Rebeleven).

Finally, there are numerous other community activities for which our Firm has a passion. John Buckley is an active member of the Christian Legal Society and the local Evangelical Christian Legal Services, which provides free legal representation to the needy in our community. He belongs to the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs, and has helped plan local outings for families of deployed service members serving in harm's way in the Middle East. He served on the Board of Directors of his local Rotary Club as well as the Champions Foundation, which honors local scholar athletes with recognition and scholarships through the area Rotary Clubs. He served for more than a decade as a Board member of the National Lawyers' Association (www.nla.org), an organization of several thousand lawyers nation-wide seeking to promote integrity and commitment to service within the U.S. legal community. Service to something beyond self is integral to promoting justice in our legal system. Our Firm actively seeks to promote duty beyond self in our legal work and our community activities.
